Vol Rifleman Cyclist.png

Although purchased in Australia, there is no doubt that this photograph depicts a British Volunteer Rifleman/Cyclist since Australia did not have military cyclists at the time this photograph was taken. It was not until the time of the Great War that Australia began to send her men into battle on these two-wheeled, steel steeds. The outdoor setting and unmarked card mount would seem to make this photograph the product of a traveling or itinerant photographer.

The rifleman wears his home service uniform with puttees. An 1888 pattern bandolier better suited for mounted duty is worn in place of the standard-issue belt pouches.
