A veteran troop sergeant major of the Royal Engineers. His turban may indicate that he was attached to an Anglo-Indian Army unit when this photograph was taken, possibly the Bombay Sappers and Miners. He wears the ribbon of the India General Service Medal and the second which is indistinct. His sword does not appear to be of a regulation British NCO pattern which again could hint at him having been seconded to an Indian unit. The setting and backdrop are outstanding, almost theatrical and a seeming hallmark of this photographer.
