Identified by two inscriptions in his own hand on the lower front and reverse side of this photograph, No. 4251 Corporal Walter Greegory og the 8th Hussars posed for this portrait in Pretoria, Transvaal early 1903.

Researching Gregory has been problematic due to the fragmentary nature of his service records. His pr-Anglo-Boer Was attestation papers have not been found and only two pages of his Great War attestation papers have come to light, and these were mixed up with those of another man.

Gregory was born in Church, Lancashire on 25 April1 8778 to Henry and Ann Gregory. He joined the 8th Hussars sometime before the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War  The extent of his wartime services can br gauged by his entry in the roll for the Queen's South Africa Medal. The roll lists his entitlement to the clasps "Orange Free State", "Transvaal", and "South Africa - 1902".

Gregory married Catherine Stevenson Crawford in 1908 and worked as a clerk in the textile industry.

With the outbreak of the Great War Gregory rejoined the colours on 14 September 1914, He would remain in England for the duration of the war, being attached to a number of training establishment sand being appointed acting company sergeant major.  He was discharged on 9 May 1919. Due to the nature of his Homefront service during the war, Gregory was not entitled to any service medals.

Gregory lived to the ripe old age of 93, passing away in Blacburn, Lancashire in 1972
