Wearing the 1854 India General Service Medal with two clasps and the 1896 India General Service Medal with a single clasp, this rifleman was photographed with his new bride at
Wynberg, Cape Colony a few years prior to the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War. It seems likely that he was a member of the 1st Battalion/King's Royal Rifle Corps since the battalion
had taken part in several recent campaigns on India's North West Frontier prior to being deployed to Cape Colony in 1896.

Although there is no way of knowing for sure he may have been on board the SS Warren Hastings when it wrecked off Réunion while transporting A, C, G, and H Companies to garrison duties on Mauritius.
