Cabinet Photograph
Artist Mechanical Arts - Photographer
China (possibly Tientsin)
c. 1900
Symbolic of the European colonial powers which carved up portions of China during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, this cabinet photograph depicts a Russian Cossack posed in a rickshaw.
Given the cold weather clothing that all three men in the photograph are wearing it is likely that this snapshot of history was captured in the northern Chinese city of Tientsin sometime around the period of the Boxer Rebellion.
The tri-coloured patch on the tunic of the man standing at the back of the rickshaw may indicate him being in Russian service.
