An un-named private of the 2nd Battalion, the Derbyshire Regiment (The Sherwood Foresters).
He wears the ribbon for the 1854-95 India General Service Medal which was awarded to this battalion with the clasp "Tirah" for the 1897 campaign. A single good conduct stripe for 2 years service with the crossed rifle badge of a marksman above appear on his left cuff. Interestingly he wears blue home service trousers with khaki drill frock. His foreign service helmet rests on the table next to him.
The 2/Derbyshires were in India between 1882 and 1898.
