Ambulanceman Tom Rowan.png

St. John Ambulanceman Tom Rowen photographed prior to his departure to South Africa and service in the Anglo-Boer War.

In South Africa Tom H. Rowan was attached as a private to No. 6 General Hospital in Johannesburg. He was entitled to the  "Cape Colony", "Orange Free State" and "Transvaal" clasps to his Queen's South Africa Medal. He would also have been
presented with the St John Ambulance Brigade Medal for South Africa.

Given the number of photographs taken of St. John personnel by John Hart one wonders if he was something akin to an official photographer to the St. John Ambulance Brigade. It is a small detail but I suspect that his studio must have stood close by the Ambulance Brigade's headquarters building.
