It seldom becomes easier to identify the subjects of a period photograph than when the sitters have a large sign declaring who they are. In this case the signal section of the Queen's West Surrey Regiment, 2nd Brigade, Natal Field Force. Note the fortified blockhouse in the background with cross-shaped loopholes. Time and insects have obliterated the photographer's name and place of work for the front of the photograph's mount leaving only the "urg" left as to the original location of the
photographer's place of business.
