Sir Robert Napier's successful campaign against Tewodros of Abyssinia (Ethiopia) was marked by this grand divertimento by John Pridham. Works like The Abyssinian Expedition consisted of set pieces intended to musically describe, without the benefit of lyrics, scenes from noted events both historical and fictional ina manner similar to modern film soundtracks.
