Identified as a member of the 1st Battalion, the Queen's Royal (West Surrey) Regiment by the "Paschal Lamb" collar badges this young soldier is already a veteran of campaigning on India's infamous North-West Frontier. He wears the ribbon for the 1895 India General Service Medal which he probably gained for the Tirah Campaign of 1897.
He has a single good conduct stripe on his left sleeve denoting at least 2 years of exemplary service and a marksman's qualification badge (two crossed rifles) above the stripe.
