South African-born Ian Hunter (13 June 1900 – 22 September 1975) as Captain Crewe in the 1939 production of The Little Princess. Hunter portrays Shirley Temple's father in the film who is believed killed in the Anglo-Boer War. He is reunited with his daughter at the end of the film with the help of a kindly Queen Victoria.
The lion and rose on his forage cap would seem to indicate that he portrayed a member of the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). The campaign ribbon on his tunic looks to be that of the India General Service Medal.
Hunter himself served Great Britain in both World Wars.
