Leopold, the Duke of Albany was the seventh child and youngest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. A carrier of the chromosome for hemophilia, Leopold would die from a cerebral hemorrhage after a fall at the age of 30.
He is pictured here in the uniform of an Army colonel. Due to his inherited illness, he was unable to pursue a military career but was appointed to an honorary colonelcy-in-Chief of the Seaforth Highlanders. His uniform in this photograph is not of Highland pattern and he holds a home service pattern helmet in his hand which was not part of the traditional regalia worn by officers of Highland regiments.
