This photograph depicts an un-named German Naval rating outfitted for duty with a landing party. While at first glance it one might be tempted to date this image to the period of the Boxer Rebellion in China that fact that he is armed with a Gew 88 Commission Rifle and he wears a single cartridge box mounted at the center of his waist belt may date this photograph to a period slightly earlier than 1900 possibly back to around 1889-90 during the Abushiri Rebellion in German East Africa.
