Major General William Earle was born in Liverpool in 1833. He fought in most of the major battles in the Crimea and was killed at the Battle of Kirbekan in January 1885 while in command of the River Column during Wolseley's Gordon Relief Expedition. Ian Hamilton described Earle as a martinet but also thought him a bold man who "was
out for fighting".
