Taken just prior to the outbreak of the Anglo-Boer War, this photograph shows a sergeant of the 5th Royal Irish
Lancers with a woman who in all likelihood is his wife. He wears marksman and lance qualification badges on his left
sleeve. The 5th Lancers tunic sported a scarlet plastron and cuff/collar facings.

The 5th Lancers arrived in Natal from England in 1898 and it is possible that this man took part in the regiment's
famous charge at the Battle of Elandslaagte on 12 October 1899.
