This image of a veteran lance corporal is being identified as being of a member of the Devonshire Regiment. This is based on the appearance of the man's collar badges - a star device
with a crown above though lack of detail prevents 100% certainty.  The man's well tailored appearance and the presence of the ribbon for the Queen's South Africa Medal would seem
to indicate that the photograph was taken after the end of the Anglo-Boer War. He wears a single good conduct stripe on his lower left cuff and a watch chain with two fobs on his breast.
Both battalions of the Devons served in South Africa during the war and it is impossible to tell which he was a member of. The fact that both battalions served in Natal does not help
matters either.
