Based on the inscription on this cart de visite's reverse side, the subject of this photograph may be Bandsman A. Mortimer of the Queen's West Surrey Regiment. The said inscription
(pictured below) is somewhat enigmatic since it appears to read: "
A. Mortimer Late 2nd Inns." or something close to that. This seems to imply that Mortimer was a former member of
the 2nd Battalion, the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers at the time the image was inscribed although the subject is clearly a member of the Queen's West Surrey Regiment as evidenced by
the Paschal Lamb collar badges. In either event I have been unable to find an "A. Mortimer" in either regiment during the approximate time period of the photograph. Perhaps young
Mortimer was a member of the West Surreys when he was photographed and later transferred to the Inniskillings.
