|This superb portrait of a bandsman, possibly a piper of the 2nd Battalion, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
(Princess Louise's) was photographed sometime around 1899 while that battalion was stationed at Ranikhet, in
northern India. The splendid uniform is matched by this soldier's almost regal bearing. The finery aside he is a
veteran of active service this being borne out by the single clasp campaign medal on his chest. This medal is most
likely a single clasped 1895 India General Service Medal although I don't believe the battalion itself saw active
while in India (1891 - 1907). He may have earned the medal while a member of another battalion.
