This superb portrait of a bandsman, possibly a piper of the 2nd Battalion, the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
(Princess Louise's) was
photographed sometime around 1899 while that battalion was stationed at Ranikhet, in
northern India
. The splendid uniform is matched by this soldier's almost regal bearing. The finery aside he is a
veteran of active service this being born
e out by the single clasp campaign medal on his chest. This medal is most
likely a single clasped 1895 India General Service Medal
although I don't believe the battalion itself saw active
while in India (1891 - 1907)
. He may have earned the medal while a member of another battalion.
