Lieutenant Hugh Fortescue Wilmshurst Gwatkin photographed while on maneuvers with the 3rd Volunteer Battalion, the Highland Light Infantry sometime around 1881-2.

Gwatkin's service with the volunteers was brief. He was commissioned a lieutenant in July 1881 and resigned his commission on 15 March 1885.

Born on 28 July 1863 at Twickenham, Middlesex, England, Gwatkin was the son of Frederick Gwatkin and Louisa Isabella Stapleton. In civilian life he was a solicitor of some note. He
married Vera Philpots at Parkstone, Dorset on 20 October 1898. They had at least one child - Brigadier General Sir Norman Wilmshurst Gwatkin, GCVO KCMG DSO (b. 1899) who
commanded  5th Guards Armoured Brigade on D-Day at Normandy.

Hugh Fortescue Wilmshurst Gwatkin died at Poole, Dorset on 9 November 1916.
