A staff sergeant of the Army Service Corps (ASC) in a well realized portrait probably taken around the time of the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War and the Anglo-Zulu War. His blue home
service helmet bears the 1869-1881 shako plate which carried the corps initials in a row instead of the intertwined cipher as seen on post-1881 helmet plates. The ASC wore overall
blue uniforms although the tonal qualities of this image gives me the impression that this sergeant's tunic was a slightly lighter blue than his trousers. His belt with its snake type clasp
was brown leather. He carries a Gothic-hilted NCOs sword.
