An fine portrait of an unidentified Canadian Militia officer. He seems to be wearing a variation of an evening dress
uniform. Note the monocle hanging from a cord around his neck. He is wearing a miniature version of the 1885
North West Canada Medal which was awarded to members of Canadian units that took part in the suppression of
the
Metis led by Louis Riel.  The North West Canada Medal had a ribbon of blue-gray with two red stripes towards
the edges. In this photograph the blue-gray portions of the ribbon appear almost white. For some unknown reason
the reflective nature of the silk medal ribbons at time played havoc with 19th Century photographic methods
