He wears the late style Foreign Service Helmet with the squared off rear peak The 1st Battalion, The Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment served with the 13th Brigade in South Africa. Although there are no photographer's marks on the photograph the ad hoc look to the setting makes me believe that the photograph was taken in a makeshift "studio" in the field someplace in South Africa.
