Taken just prior to the outbreak of the Boer War, this photograph shows a sergeant of the 5th Royal Irish Lancers
with a woman who in all likelihood is his wife. He wears marksman and lance qualification badges on his left sleeve.
The 5th Lancers tunic sported a green plastron befitting their Irish designation.
