An extremely rare image depicting a member of the Port Elizabeth, Cape Colony volunteer unit Prince Alfred's Guards. In this instance Bandsman Corporal Ted LeGros. He inscribed the reverse of the photograph (below) to an unknown sibling in January, 1885. I have not uncovered much regarding this unit One member - G. C. Christian - who was killed in action at Isandlwana on 22 January, 1879 during the Anglo-Zulu War. The unit arose like many of the other South African volunteer units during the 1860's and served in the 9th Cape Frontier War and G.C.Christain not withstanding it missed the Angle Zulu War of 1879. It again saw action in the Boer War and still survives to this day. No other information has been uncovered on Corporal LeGros.
