Signed to his mother on the reverse of this Real Photo Post Card as Fred this soldier has indicated that he was
member of the Eastern Mounted Rifles.

I have been unable to find any reference to a unit specifically called the Eastern Mounted Rifles. Perhaps this is a
local name for a unit officially called something else. I have found numerous references to mounted rifle units thats
served in the eastern Transvaal during the Boer War many seem to have had Australian affiliations such as the
Eastern Transvaal Scouts.

Fred's splendid uniform has also evaded identification up to this point as.

The reverse inscription written by Fred to his mother. In it he mentions Ruby who seems to have been his wife as well
as their children. As no address is present and he wrote on both sections of the cards reverse it is an educated
assumption that this card was either mailed in an envelope or included inside a parcel.
