| The sitter has inscribed the reverse of this Cabinet Photograph thus: "Bloemfontein South Africa 7-6-00. Sarah, with best love from Tom." From appearances Tom might have been a member of either the Royal Artillery or possibly the Mounted Infantry. Regardless his rank seems to have been that of Saddler Corporal. Although he seems to have taken care to look smart for the photograph his uniform looks to be that which he wore in the field.
