The sitter has inscribed the reverse of this Cabinet Photograph thus: "Bloemfontein South Africa 7-6-00. Sarah, with best love from Tom." From appearances Tom might have been a member of either the Royal Horse Artillery or the Royal Artillery. Regardless his rank seems to have been that of Bridler/Saddler Corporal.  Although he seems to have taken care to look smart for the photograph his uniform looks to be that which he wore in the field.
