The maple leaf badge on this man's "Montana Peak" or "Boss of the Plains" hat clearly identifies him as one of
Canada's soldiers who served the Empire during the Boer War. He wears the ribbons for both the Queen's and King's
South Africa Medal which dates the photograph to after the end of the war. With the dark colored shoulder straps and
unique hat band the uniform appears to be that of the South African Constabulary. This is also bourne out by the
"AC" visible on his right shoulder.
