| The heir to the Bonaparte throne of France, Louis Napoleon went into exile in England after his father Napoleon III was defeated in the Franco-Prussian War. At the behest of Queen Victoria he was granted entry into the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. It is in the uniform of a cadet of that institution that he appears here. He gained permission to join Lord Chelmsford's command as an observer during the Anglo-Zulu War and while on a scouting mission was ambushed and killed near the Ityotyosi River. I originally believed that this image as a cut down Cabinet Photograph but upon close examination it appears to have been die-cut by the photographer for framing. Oval Format Mounted Photograph 3 3/4 inches by 5 1/4 inches (approximately 9.5cm x 13cm) Unknown Photographer - Possibly William Cobb 77-78 Wellington Street, Woolwich. c. 1875 |
