Sergeant Meldrum - possibly of the Royal Artillery - photographed with his beautiful but unnamed wife and their
young native servant Jumbo in Bangalore, East India in March of 1865.
The sergeant looks off camera in a device typical of the period and his wife assumes a contemplative pose also used
regularly by photographers. The true highlight of the image in Jumbo who with his direct gaze into the camera as well
as his seeming to be enjoy himself steals the show.
The inscribed reverse addressed to a Miss Butts is shown below.
