| 2673 Sergeant John Madden of the 4th Battalion, 60th Rifles. Madden was promoted to sergeant on 14 February, 1877. He served in "E" Company and died of unknown causes on 26 September, 1880. He inscribed the reverse of the photograph "With kind regards" to an unknown recipient on 15 March, 1880 a only a few months before his death. A later hand added additional details in pencil on the reverse. I have been unable to turn up Madden's service records. So far the only official record that I have been able to find that seems to confirm the information on the photograph's reverse is in the Army Returns Index - Deaths - 1881 to 1885 that shows a John Madden dying at "Karrachi" in 1881. Unfortunatley no rank or regiment is listed in the Army Returns. Carte de Visite H. W. Loof. - Photographer Mussoorie, India 1880 |
