This interestingly posed and framed photograph of a United States Volunteer cavalry officer was probably taken at one of the many southern United States military encampments that housed troops prior to and immediately after the Spanish-American War. The United States Volunteers differed from the locally raised state volunteer and militia units in that they were raised on a national level.
