This highly ornamented Carte de Visite shows an unidentified member of the 4 Regiment de Tirailleurs. The prominant display of the soldiers' bayonet is typical of French military photographs of the era. The French placed a high degree of importance on the use of the bayonet in battle and it shows up in photographs so often and many times in the absence of any other weapons that at times it seems that the French actually considered the rifles that the bayonets attached as the secondary weapon.
