This photograph of General - later Field Marshal - Frederick Sleigh Roberts VC was sometime after the 2nd Afghan War (1878-80) since the most recent campaign medals evident are the four clasped Afghan Medal and the Kabul to Kandahar Star. This photograph has also been autographed with his nick name "Bobs" - which was given him by his men - by Roberts directly beneath his image. There is no hint as to whom he had intended this photograph. Roberts won the Victoria Cross during the Indian Mutiny.
Below is an autographed envelope in Robert's hand to a Lt. Col Knowles of the 67th Regiment. The envelope is Government of India stationary. The envelope still holds the dried and pressed remains of several small yellow flowers.
