A veteran with his family. Based upon the location of the photographer's studio it is possible that this man and his family may have had this portrait taken during a holiday trip to the sea. His medal is somewhat problematic. Under magnification it bears the young Wyon bust of Queen Victoria that coupled with the ornate suspender mean that it can only be one of two medals: the 1854 India General Service Medal or the 1877-79 South Africa "Zulu War" Medal. The ribbon appears dark and I have seen examples of both medals in 19th Century photographs where the ribbons appear very dark if not almost black. The single clasp on the medal is unfortunately unreadable.
