I have always been struck by the modernity of this couple. They do not look - at least to me - like people who lived upwards of 100 years ago.  He is a private in the Army Service Corps who appears to be outfitted for mounted duties and seems to have a book (or flask) tucked into the inside pocket of his tunic.
