That photographer H. J. Smith might choose to reproduce Richard Caton Woodville's iconic drawing comes as no surprise since the sketch's association with Kipling's poem The
Absent-Minded Beggar led to it being reproduced on everything from silk pocked handkerchiefs (see below) to figurines to china tea services. The close association between Kipling's
poem and Woodville's drawing had often led to the poem's title being incorrectly applied to the drawing.
