| A rare image of a veteran Gurkha Rifleman. While his regimental badge is obscure, he is none the less a veteran of at least five campaigns as shown by his medals in this case what are most probably the 1854 and 1895 India General Service Medals with what appear to be two and three clasps respectively. Standing smartly for the photographer this proud soldier is armed with the Martini Henry rifle - which he is barely taller than. It would have been a foolhardy enemy who would have let his diminutive size detract from his fighting ability. Carte de Visite Unknown Photographer India c 1895 |
