With touches of the old and new, this young rifle volunteer was probably a member of the 6th (City of London) Battalion, London Regiment (City of London Rifles). His gray uniform
hearkens back to the early days of the rifle volunteer movement while his visored cap was of the most recently adopted pattern. He wars a large marksman or shooting medal on his left
breast which appears to bear the portrait of King Edward VII. He is armed with an early pattern Lee-Enfield Rifle. His belt and cartridge pouches are of the black leather rifle pattern
with an s-hook belt clasp.
