Uniformed much like a contemporary British regular from the same time period, this private of Canadian militia and wears a glengarry cap, the Canadian version of the 1877 pattern
tunic without collar badges, dark blue trousers probably with red piping down the outside seams. He is armed with the .577 Snider-Enfiled Rifle. This white cross belts - no longer worn
in the British Army by this date - harken back to an earlier time. The Snider rifle has by this time been rendered obsolete in the British Army but continued to be used by local Canadian
forces well into the 1880s simply because British authorities never permitted the issue of Martini-Herny rifles to Canadian troops.
